14. THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

1. The Beatitudes

Jesus went up the mountain, followed by a large crowd, and preached the Sermon on the Mount with the beatitudes to them.

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
  • Blessed are those who mourn: God will comfort them
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled
  • Blessed are the compassionate: God will have mercy on them
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God
  • Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

And Jesus told them: "Pray like this: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."
