1. The Baptism of Jesus

One day Jesus went from Nazareth of Galilee to the Jordan, where John was baptizing. John did not want to baptize him, saying: - I am the one who needs to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? Jesus answered him: - Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then John allowed him. And Jesus, after being baptized, came up immediately from the water. And behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him. And a voice from heaven said: - This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

2. The Temptations of Jesus

Jesus answered: - It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Then the devil took Him to the holy city and placed Him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him: - If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written: «He will command his angels concerning you, and they will bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone». Jesus said to him: - It is also written: You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and said to Him: - All these things I will give you, if you fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him: - Begone, Satan, for it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve. Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.
