Jesus' parents went every year to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. When He was twelve years old, they went up as was the custom, and after the days of the festival were over, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, without His parents being aware of it. Thinking that He was in the company, they traveled a whole day, and they searched for Him among their relatives and acquaintances; when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. And it happened that, after three days, they found Him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers of the Law, listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. When they saw Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him: - Son, why have you done this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress. He answered them: - Why were you looking for Me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father's house? But they did not understand what He was saying to them.
