Jesus Walks on Water

Gospel according to Matthew (Mk 6:45-52 - Jn 6:16-21)

Immediately, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After dismissing them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone.

The boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified and said:

--It’s a ghost!

And they cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them:

--Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid!

Peter replied:

--Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.

Jesus said:

--Come.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out:

--Lord, save me!

Immediately, Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying:

--You of little faith! Why did you doubt?

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying:

--Truly you are the Son of God.

QUESTIONS AND POINTS FOR REFLECTION

1. The text says that Jesus, after dismissing the crowds, "went up on a mountainside to pray." In a world full of noise, how do you think personal prayer helps you maintain your Christian identity before making decisions or after a long day? Why do we sometimes struggle to see daily miracles? What can you do to have a more open heart?
2. Effort and Trial: The disciples were straining at the oars because the wind was against them. Often, following Jesus is not easy. How do you react when your path of faith becomes tiring? Do you trust that Jesus is watching you from "the mountain" (from His glory)?
3. Recognizing the Lord: The disciples were frightened, thinking He was a ghost. What "ghosts" or fears prevent you today from recognizing God's presence in your daily life? How can you learn to distinguish Jesus' voice from your own fears?
4. The Peace of Christ: Jesus says: "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." In the sacrament of Confirmation, you will receive the gift of Fortitude. How do you think the Holy Spirit can help you stay calm amidst the "storms" of your youth?
5. How is it that Saint Peter is also able to walk on the water?
6. When he realizes he is walking on water, he loses faith. How is this possible if he was already doing it?
7. It seems Saint Peter did not know how to swim. Why does he call out to Jesus instead of calling to those in the boat?
