Jesus Curses a Fig Tree

Gospel Mt 21:18-22 - Mk 11:12-14 - 11:20-24

Early in the morning, as Jesus was returning to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to the tree:

--"May you never bear fruit again!"

Immediately the tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and asked:

--"How did the fig tree wither so quickly?"

Jesus replied:

--"Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

QUESTIONS AND POINTS FOR REFLECTION

1. The Power of Faith: Jesus says that with faith, we can not only wither a fig tree but even move mountains. What "mountains" or difficulties in your life do you believe you could overcome if you trusted more in God's strength?
2. Praying with Confidence: "Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive." What is your prayer life like? Do you ask with the certainty that God hears you and will give you what you need most, even if it is not always what you expect?
3. The Fruitless Fig Tree: The tree had leaves but no fruit. Sometimes we may seem very religious on the outside (attending Mass, being part of a group), but we do not bear fruit in love or helping others. What concrete fruits do you think Jesus hopes to find in you today?
4. The Moment to Bear Fruit: Although it was not the season for figs (according to other Gospels), Jesus asks for fruit. This teaches us that for a Christian, it is always the time to do good. Do you feel that you sometimes make excuses ("I'm too young," "I'll do it later") to avoid committing seriously to the Gospel?
5. The Efficacy of Jesus' Word: With a single word from Jesus, the tree withers. This shows us the power of His will. Are you aware that the Holy Spirit you will receive has the power to transform you and "cut away" the attitudes in you that do not bear fruit or that cause you harm?
