31. The Wisdom of King Solomon (1 Kings 3)

The Judgment of Solomon

Solomon, son of David, inherited the throne of Israel during a time of peace. In a dream, the Lord appeared to him and said: "Ask what I shall give you." Instead of asking for wealth, honor, or long life, Solomon asked for an "understanding heart" to govern the people and to distinguish between good and evil. This request pleased God so much that He granted him wisdom greater than any other man's, along with riches and glory.

His wisdom quickly became famous, especially through the renowned "Judgment of Solomon" involving two mothers disputing over a baby. Solomon proposed cutting the child in half to give a portion to each; the true mother, moved by love, preferred to give her son to the other woman rather than see him die. Thus, the king identified the real mother. Under his reign, the first Temple of Jerusalem was built, becoming the spiritual center of Israel.

Solomon's example teaches us that Christian wisdom is not just intelligence, but a gift from the Holy Spirit to see the world through God's eyes. Seeking first the Kingdom of God and His will is the best choice we can make. Solomon reminds us that true authority is born from service and that love is the best criterion for finding the truth in life's conflicts.

Reflection Activities: 1 Kings 3

1. Text Comprehension: What did Solomon ask from God and how did he manage to discover the true mother in the judgment?
2. Doctrinal Content: What is the gift of discernment and why is it more valuable than riches or personal success?
3. Catechetical Application: In the judgment, the mother prefers to lose her child rather than have him die. How does this sacrifice reflect God's love for us?
4. Faith Commitment: Solomon understood his authority as a service. If you have any responsibility (class representative, older sibling, team captain), how can you exercise it with humility by serving others?
