21. Joshua and the Conquest of Jericho (Joshua 6)
After the death of Moses, Joshua received the mission to lead the people of Israel toward the Promised Land. The first great obstacle was the city of Jericho, protected by imposing walls that seemed impossible to cross. But the Lord did not ask Joshua to conquer it with the strength of weapons, but with obedience and faith. For six days, the people and the priests, carrying the Ark of the Covenant, walked around the city in silence once a day.
On the seventh day, following God's instructions, they marched around the city seven times. At the end of the last lap, the priests blew the ram's horn trumpets, and all the people shouted with all their might. At that moment, the walls of Jericho miraculously collapsed before their eyes. The victory was not the result of military strategy, but of faithfulness to the word of God. Jericho became the sign that the Lord fought alongside Israel and that no obstacle was too great if they trusted in Him.
The conquest of Jericho is a powerful lesson for our Christian life. Joshua is a figure of Christ (his name means "The Lord saves"), who leads us to the true Promised Land. The walls of Jericho represent the "walls" of sin, fear, or selfishness that often block our path. It teaches us that perseverance and prayer are our best tools to overcome difficulties. As God said to Joshua: "Be strong and courageous," because faith in the Lord has the power to bring down any barrier that prevents us from living in His freedom.
Key Points according to the Bible
- Obedience and Faith: Victory comes through following God's commands, however strange they may seem.
- The Ark of the Covenant: God's presence is at the center of the procession and the driver of the conquest.
- Perseverance: They had to wait seven days; God's timing requires human patience.
- Strength and Courage: Joshua reminds us that strength is not the absence of fear, but total trust in the Lord.
